PhD Student: Thermal Aspects of High Precision Inkjet Printing

Job description Funded by the Dutch government and industry partners, the HiPrins research project will push high-precision inkjet printing to new application fields and to new levels of accuracy.
We are looking for a PhD student to work on one of the work packages in this project: The study of thermal effects on the accuracy of inkjet printing of electronic circuits.
Initially, you will be studying etch-resistant printing on printed circuit boards of 0.5 x 0.5 metres. The ink used in this process is a hot-melt. The use of high temperature drops in a high-precision environment poses some interesting design challenges: How does one account for the thermal strain in the substrate? How does one maximize printing accuracy taking this thermal strain into account? What is the most efficient method to transport the heat from the printing area? In order to answer these questions, a combination of experimental research and multiphysics modelling will be required.
The carrier for your research will be Lunaris, an inkjet printing test-bed constructed by printer manufacturer OCE together with precision machine designer NTS. You will spend most of your time at the inkjet application centre of the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, where Lunaris is located.

Requirements
University Graduate
This research combines experimental and theoretical/numerical aspects; we are therefore looking for a mechanical engineering PhD student who has a proven affinity for both.
Candidates for this project should have a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering as well as good analytical and communication skills.
Delft University of Technology is a bilingual organization; a good command of English (written and spoken) is essential; a good command of Dutch as well is preferred.

     Within the Mechatronic System Design section, three main research areas are being developed: high precision positioning systems, micro- and opto-mechatronics and metrology. We aim to combine high quality research and education, in order to provide both innovative design solutions and high quality engineers to the world-leading Dutch precision and mechatronic industry. The research within the programme is performed in close cooperation with partners within PME, DCMM and industry.
