Phd New Production Platforms for Chemicals CHE

KTH School of Chemical Science and Engineering (CHE) recruits a PhD Student in the area of New Production Platforms for Chemicals

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden and is situated in the capital of Sweden, Stockholm. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.

The School of Chemical Science and Engineering includes the areas Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Fibre and Polymer Technology. It encompasses both fundamental and applied chemical sciences and seeks sustainable development through scientific excellence. Many researcher activities are interdisciplinary across the borders from chemistry to material science, environmental science, biochemistry, biology and medicine. The School offers Bachelor and Master programs in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and three international Master programs specializing in Biomaterials, Chemical science and engineering and Pharmaceutical engineering.
Graduate research project

New production platforms for chemicals

The Chemical Industry of Europe, accounts for approximately one third of the world’s total production, supplies products to virtually all downstream industrial sectors, and is a major contributor to the EU economy. The sector comprises some 27.000 enterprises in Europe of which the vast majority is of small to medium size. EU chemical industry currently employs 1.2 million people directly, and the net trade surplus has grown from €14 billion in 1990 to €38 billion in 2005. However, the European chemical industry has reached a phase of maturity. Many products have become commodities and subject to strong competition particularly from Asia. The European Union has decided to finance the F³ consortium project by about 18 MEUR to investigate new production platforms. The vision of the F³ consortium is that the EU chemical industry would be much more competitive, if it could operate modular continuous plants (F³ plant) for low to medium scale production rates. The F³ premise is that the operation of modular, continuous plants will be more economical and more sustainable than either (i) operation of continuous processes at world scale or (ii) operation of batch processes at low to medium scale.

The project
The F3 production platform involves continuous processing at small to medium scale, in modular plants applying various methods of process intensification. An important technological challenge in the F3 production platform is the handling of solid phases, like catalysts and crystals. This particular project is focused on crystallization of pharmaceutical compounds in continuous small scale crystallizers. The project will focus on various methods to control the nucleation, the growth conditions and the transport of crystals through the system. The project is financed by the European Union within the seventh framework program: F7.
Qualifications

A suitable background for the project is primarily in chemical engineering.
